Theory of Change
Our theory of change holds that if all people are empowered and engaged; and if they live in supportive communities where systems and institutions provide high-quality, gender-equitable sexual and reproductive healthcare; and if policies, laws, and processes are supportive; then they will exercise their rights to gender-equitable sexual and reproductive health services and participate as equal members of society.
Values
EngenderHealth is guided by, and prioritizes living into, our five core values: reflection, inclusion, integrity, respect, and transformation.
Reflection: We question, challenge, learn, and adapt.
- We review program data and results (successes and failures) to improve our processes and increase our impact.
- We think hard about the language we use, and make changes so we are inclusive and respectful with our words.
- We share lessons across projects and programs, and adapt strategies for use in new places.
- We learn from external partners and thinkers, and consider how to incorporate new ideas and data into our work.
Inclusion: We are committed to equality, justice, and leaving no one behind.
- We measure our success in achieving value for money not only by reaching many people with SRH services, but also by reaching hard-to-reach communities and individuals.
- We review our salary structure and equity and conduct pay-gap analyses to ensure we are being fair to staff.
- We continuously look for ways to make our hiring and other human resources processes more equitable and supportive to diverse candidates.
- We look for ways to partner with organizations that are different from ours.
Integrity: We are principled and honest, and we walk our talk.
- We negotiate openly and honestly with partners and vendors, and we are fair in procurement and payments.
- When we start a new initiative, we articulate our principles and hold ourselves accountable to them.
- We do not claim expertise where we don’t have it.
- We welcome external assessments of our progress toward being a truly equitable and effective organization (for example, Global Health 50/50 and Fair Share of Women Leaders).
Respect: We value the wisdom and agency of our collaborators and appreciate our differences.
- We use our subaward management process as an opportunity to learn with our subcontractors and strengthen capacity where helpful.
- We work with local organizations in ways that recognize their leadership and strengths, including pursuing opportunities to act as a subgrantee to local partners.
- We engage community members in defining and ensuring high-quality care in health facilities.
Transformation: We seek bold new ideas and opportunities to innovate for progress.
- In our history, we have changed our mission, focus, and name to become the organization EngenderHealth is today.
- We recognized that gender equality needed to be at the core of our work to achieve our goals, so we reoriented our strategic plan to center gender equality.
- We continually assess and evolve our global structure to promote local leadership and expand meaningful partnerships.
