Universal Health Coverage Day, December 12, 2023 (WASHINGTON)—Scaling up voluntary postpartum and postabortion family planning (PPFP and PAFP) has tremendous potential to address unmet need for family planning and improve maternal and newborn health outcomes. Universal Health Coverage and Primary Health Care frameworks provide opportunities to increase the availability, quality, and coverage of these interventions and advance progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals.

The USAID MOMENTUM Safe Surgery in Family Planning and Obstetrics project convened leaders in the family planning and maternal health communities in June 2023 to identify key barriers and enablers of PPFP and PAFP scale-up and recommendations to catalyze scale-up. A report of this meeting is available HERE.

Drawing on these discussions, MOMENTUM Safe Surgery, FIGO, and FP2030 have coordinated a Call to Action for global and national stakeholders to join forces to advance PPFP and PAFP. Learn more about the Call to Action and the work of the partners endorsing this action-oriented agenda here.
