Madagascar

Madagascar is an island situated off the southeast coast of Africa. Nearly 40% of Madagascar’s population of 29.6 million is under 15 years old.

According to DHS, the modern contraceptive prevalence rate for women 15 to 49 in Madagascar is 43%, and 46% of pregnant people delivered with a skilled attendant in 2020.

Our Work in Madagascar

The EngenderHealth-led MOMENTUM Safe Surgery in Family Planning and Obstetrics project is working with partners in four districts (Mahanoro, Toamasina I, Toamasina II, and Vatomandry) in the Atsinanana region of Madagascar. Over a half million people live in the supported areas. Our work in Madagascar focuses on strengthening provider capacity, local leadership, clinical teams, and local professional societies and associations to provide referrals along the continuum of care and to supply high-quality surgical care to clients. We do this work through partnerships, trainings, facility improvements, building local leader capacity, and creating mentorship systems. At the national level, we support the Ministry of Health in updating and advancing the National Plan for Improved Essential Surgical Services, including technical and financial assistance. The project integrates a technical working group of national-level safe surgery champions to guide planning, roll-out, and scale-up.

The MOMENTUM Safe Surgery in Family Planning and Obstetrics project works with partners in Madagascar to strengthen safe surgery by scaling up proven practices and supporting safe and appropriate cesarean delivery and peripartum hysterectomy. As part of the larger MOMENTUM suite, our aim is to improve the health and well-being of individuals, families, and communities with the ultimate goal of accelerating the reduction of maternal, newborn, and child death and disability.
